- COOLING SYSTEM TREATMENT
- (Basic Criteria)
- Any water system can experience problems with scale, corrosion, suspended debris and microbiological fouling. The level and type of these contaminants will depend on the operational parameters and design of system that the water is associated with. In all cases, it is important to note that, in order to maintain hygienic conditions and low maintenance requirements, no one of the above should be treated in isolation. This is because of the presence of one can encourage the presence of another e.g. suspended solids can hide bacteria, and can produce acidic by-products which can cause corrosion, scale can break free to produce suspended solids, etc.
- A cooling system is particularly susceptible to the above because the condition of the water is constantly changing due to normal evaporation, atmospheric contamination and fluctuations in make-up water quality.
- It is, therefore, important to ensure that all possible contaminants are addressed and controlled. This can be achieved using the following equipment (see attached schematic diagram):
- Scale - Magnetic Non-Intrusive Units
- Bacteriological Fouling - Copper Ion Generator
- Suspended Solids Filtration/Conductivity Bleed
- Corrosion - Conductivity Bleed
- Magnetic Units
- Exposure to a magnetic South pole field the more positively charged Hydrogens tend to shield the negatively charged Oxygen. The resultant shielding is what changes the net negative charge of the non-magnetized water molecule to the net positive charge of the magnetized water so that the Carbonate molecules are not allowed to aggregate and crystallize. This also works on dissolving existing crystalline structures (previous scaling) by cleaving the bonds between the carbonate molecules via the same charge influence.
- Copper Ion Generator
- The effect of very low levels of copper on bacteriological contaminants has long been used for drinking water applications such as on board ships, etc. This device simply generates low levels of copper ions (effective against algae and biofilm growth and bacteria) in the recirculating water.
- The ions are produced by pressing the water through a chamber housing a copper anode. A small controlled DC current is then passed between the anodes thereby releasing copper into the water.
- The current can be adjusted via the controller to vary the dissolution rates to suit the site conditions.
- Filtration
- The inclusion of a side stream filter allows the continual polishing of the water to remove debris from process or the atmosphere.
- The removal of suspended matter improves the effectiveness of water treatment, as it will minimize the potential for bacteriological hideout and under-deposit corrosion.
- Conductivity Controlled Bleed
- As with any form of water treatment, it is important to control the concentration of dissolved salts caused by the evaporation of pure water during normal operation.
- This in conjunction with a corrator and calcium balance calculations will allow optimum conditions to minimise both corrosion and scale deposition and, at the same time, maximize savings in water consumption.
- This system continuously monitors the conductivity of the recirculating water via an in-line flow cell. This sends a signal to a controller, which opens a solenoid bleed valve as per the settings dictated on commissioning and routine maintenance.
